Authorities have identified the woman fatally shot in an officer-involved incident early Monday morning in Northfield as 27-year-old Megan L. Whiting.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to officials, at approximately 12:12 a.m., officers from the Northfield and Tilton Police Departments responded to a 911 call from an apartment located at 20 Vine Street. The caller reported a domestic disturbance involving Whiting, who was allegedly assaulting another resident with a fire extinguisher. The caller stated that Whiting was striking the caller’s girlfriend, smashing objects inside the apartment, breaking a window, and repeatedly urged dispatchers to hurry. Dispatchers also reported hearing yelling in the background of the call.
Police arrived within approximately six minutes. Investigators said that as officers entered the apartment, they observed Whiting armed with a knife and standing in close proximity to an injured female resident. Officers reportedly gave multiple commands for Whiting to drop the knife. One officer ultimately discharged his firearm, striking Whiting.
Officers then removed the injured female from the apartment and separated the knife from Whiting. Whiting was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Whiting died from multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death was ruled a homicide, defined by the Medical Examiner as the killing of one person by another.
No officers or other civilians were physically injured during the incident. Authorities confirmed that one of the initial responding officers was wearing a body camera.
The names of the involved officers are being withheld pending completion of formal interviews. Officials stated no further information will be released until the officer who fired the weapon has been interviewed.
