The Tuscaloosa community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Danny Clay Hartley, 65, who died after his vehicle crashed into a tree on the University of Alabama campus Monday afternoon.

According to the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit, investigators believe Hartley suffered a sudden medical event moments before the crash, which occurred at the intersection of McCorvey Drive and Campus Drive West.

Authorities said callers reported a vehicle striking a tree near Marr’s Spring shortly before 2 p.m. Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and attempted lifesaving measures in an effort to save Hartley’s life. Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed Hartley was not a student, faculty member, or staff at the University of Alabama.

The tragic incident has left family, friends, and community members shaken as they process the unexpected loss of a 65-year-old life. Hartley’s passing serves as a painful reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike, leaving loved ones to grieve a life taken far too soon.
