The truck, operated by 61-year-old Brenden Larry Christensen of San Diego, had stalled on an uphill grade in the outside lane while traveling northbound and had reportedly stalled multiple times prior to the collision. The impact caused the Honda and part of the Freightliner’s cargo to catch fire. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three passengers in the Honda were injured in the crash. Lawrence Wayne Smith Jr., 60, and Annika Jace Smith, 18, both of El Sobrante, were airlifted to area hospitals with serious injuries. Ivan Amadeo Gonzalez, 19, of Hercules, California, a family friend, was transported by ground ambulance with minor injuries. The passengers included Smith’s father, his twin sister, and the family friend.
The Freightliner driver, Christensen, was not injured. Oregon State Police reported that impairment is believed to be a contributing factor, and Christensen was arrested on charges of DUII and manslaughter.
The crash caused a three-hour closure of the highway while emergency crews investigated. Authorities were assisted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Canyonville Fire Department, Glendale Valley Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Family, friends, and the community remember Smith as a loving son and brother. His sudden and tragic death has left a profound impact on all who knew him. Memorials and tributes are expected to honor his life and legacy in the coming days.
